When you were a child, were you ever taken to a store that sold expensive items yet didn’t bother to protect them behind, say, glass? Perhaps it was a music shop where guitars and flutes and bongos stood out like playmates in the schoolyard, beckoning you to touch them with your Chupa Chups-holding hands?
Or maybe it was lighting store where glittering chandeliers dangled just above your pig-tail-adorned head, time but begging to be swung from like the Tarzan you think you could be, if only you tried talking to monkeys.
When you were a child in a store like that, were you ever told to “Look But Don’t Touch”? Because I certainly was.
And now I find myself, several years down the track, writing a chocolate review with a similar phrase in mind: “Look But Don’t Judge”.
The Curious Chocolatier Holiday Spice Milk Chocolate with Pecans and Cranberries
You might be wondering why I can’t judge and discuss the pros and cons of this chocolate with you, the way I have with almost every chocolate to have passed my lips lately. The long answer is that as a sociologist, I know I have to be upfront about any personal biases that could impede my perception of phenomena/events/people/beliefs/experiences/and now chocolate. I know that, sometimes, these biases may entangle me in their webs and affect my Sense Of The World.
That’s the long answer. The short answer is: orange oil.
In the post about my disastrous peppermint rice pudding attempt, I mentioned that I can’t stomach orange flavours. That’s why you’ve never, nor will you ever, see me reviewing orange chocolate on this blog. I normally check the ingredients of flavoured chocolates before purchase and yet, because this bar was given me by the lovely L-Izzle, I did not.
I must be absolutely clear about one thing: this is really nice creation, both aesthetically and, insofar as I can tell, flavour-wise. The chocolate itself is a lovely caramel colour and looks gorgeous offset with plump, ruby cranberries and light-brown roasted pecans.
The aroma is lovely and Christmassy, reminding me of pine needles and spiced cookies. The pecans are fresh-tasting and not at all stale, providing the soft buttery crunch that pecans are known for. The cranberries are soft, not desiccated, and pleasantly sweet with just a slight tinge of tart*.
But, friends, I couldn’t eat more than three squares of this. I tried, really I did, but I’m simply hyper-ridiculously-terribly-hyper-hyper-aware of even the slightest hint of orange in chocolate. Think of how Hugh Hefner is hyper-aware of all big-bosomed blondes in his vicinity, or how the hosts of The View are hyper-aware of possible silence in their conversation and endeavour to fill it with high-pitched shrieks.
That’s me with orange. I’ve given tastes of this chocolate to other people and not only have they found it lovely, they can barely tell the orange from the ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla also found in the bar. Sadly, for me, the orange is omnipresent. All I can say is that this bar is aesthetically gorgeous, that I’m almost certain it’s delicious if you don’t mind orange flavour, and that I hope you don’t think less of me for bringing Hugh Hefner and his droopy skin into your mind.
* I wonder if that’s an apt description for my socks-n-stocks combination?

aww shame you’re broken
What a mean thing to say to your future Hippo-playmate!
Hmm – I am not the hugest fan of orange choc either – but seeling all those nuts / berries – well I just may be inclined to make an exception should I come across chocolate such as this!!!
As I suspected (if you read some of the other comments), most people can’t even taste the orange here. So I think you’d likely enjoy this one!
Bummer! Not big on Orange in my chocolate either, but your description of this Christmassy, pine needles and spiced cookies, soft buttery crunch pecans and soft pleasantly sweet with just a slight tinge of tart cranberry sounds to die for. Im off to purchase some now!
Oops, it’s a seasonal bar! I think you’ll have to wait for Christmas to try it (if she brings it back). Good luck
Come to think of it, your orange oil aversion is like my aversion to spirits. Vodka, whiskey, gin, rum — no matter how well the bartender mixes it, no matter how much simple syrup or cucumber or pomegranate juice or what have you, I detect the *slightest* taste and my stomach turns. To me, vodka is the vilest taste conceivable — and it’s supposed to be flavorless!
I can stomach orange, though it’s not my favorite, but orange-plus-alcohol or orange-as-medicine definitely makes me queasy. So I think I am able to put myself in your orange-hating shoes.
And ha — I know it’s not Christmas in Australia any more than it is in the U.S., but at least it’s cold where you are. Here, it’s over 100 degrees F! So Christmas chocolate made me chuckle.
I can’t stomach spirits either! I’m trying to wean myself back onto them, but I still prefer my affogatos with just ice cream and coffee
Now, my dear, you know I think very highly of you, but you just made a little error, I think, in your chuckling about the Christmas season/temperature thing. Remember how we’re on the opposite side of the world? And how Christmas is, therefore, in Summer for us? So the cold doesn’t help matters much
So Christmas chocolate in July makes no sense in any conceivable hemisphere!
I feel like candy canes and cinnamon and nutmeg and cranberries etc etc taste better in the winter. But maybe because I’m used to it? Hmm. I cannot imagine gorging on mashed potatoes and turkey and pie when it’s hot out. My mind is just blown in every direction and I’ll just have to stop thinking about this.
hahah it’s clearly a sign that I’m definitely NOT bothered by orange in chocolate, as I didn’t even notice the inclusion when I was eating this one. If I had, i certainly would not have picked it out for you!! ahhh well, i’m glad you at least enjoyed it aesthetically
I knew it! Gah! I knew normal people wouldn’t even be able to pick out the orange. Darn my stupid sensitive tastebuds of doom!
Hannah! I was given a bar of the Curious Chocolatier’s chocolate and as soon as I saw it I thought of you. It’s the caramel milk chocolate with pecan!
Aw, what a lovely thing to say!
I’m kinda loving how more and more people are seeing me as inseparable from chocolate
What do you think of that flavour?
I had this bar a few months ago after our Canberra trip. I found them (dearer it must said) at the National Museum. I’m not a great fan of orange and chocolate (or cooked orange in general really), and I certainly wouldn’t search it out, but I don’t remember noticing it here. It was more of a mulled wine kind of memory, which I guess includes oranges more often than not now that I think of it. I thought it was pretty good though. I did prefer the caramel pecan one which was just like my memories of turtles that I used to eat in Canada.
And that’s what people are *meant* to taste! A lovely spiced warm Christmas flavour. I’m so annoyed at myself
The caramel one is definitely what I would have picked as a potential favourite of yours
You just reminded me of something I did when I was 4. I was in a gift shop with my Mum and there was one of those wicked lantern things on a shelf at 4-year-old’s height. There was a little knob that you could turn to make the wick move up and down. A little turning knob! How could I resist?! (stop snickering) Needless to say, the whole thing somehow fell off the shelf and the glass broke and my Mum had to pay for it
I really needed some chocolate that day. I suspect I didn’t get any.
I don’t think people realise just how tempting the Glittery, the Shiny, and the Interactive are to wee tots. (Honestly, I’m fairly certain that even at 23 I’d be unable to resist a little turning knob.)
Christmas in July! Although I suppose since it’s winter down there, the flavor combo is infinitely more appropriate in July than at actual Christmas time. And now the thought of zucchini and tomatoes at Christmas dinner, as color-appropriate as they may be, is making my head hurt.
Christmas in July is quite a popular event in Australia, actually, because it’s the one time of year when pudding and roast turkey and all those heavy foods make sense. Except, in my family, we eat all that even when it’s swelteringly hot in December. Stupid tradition! One day you must visit me for a modern Aussie Christmas and I’ll do prawns and smoked salmon and fruit salad and your mind will pop.
Pecans and cranberries in chocolate… Yum!!
They were definitely delicious additions!
Um, are we the same person? I know I said this in your pudding post, but mint and orange are my two most hated flavors as well! I don’t think I could have tolerated this chocolate either…despite the fact that it’s got nice, big nuts ;]
Even the most nut-lovin’ girl needs a break from all that testosterone sometimes, right? I mean, from all those good healthy fats… yes, that’s what I meant.
Lauren: To be fair, “Christmas in July” is actually a common event in Australia, precisely because the “traditional” Christmas foods are inappropriate for our weather, so people like to have a fake Christmas dinner in winter. In my family, though, we always have the hot foods at Christmas anyway! But I don’t want to make your head hurt with talk of steamed puddings and roast vegies in 38C heat, so I’ll stop talking about it
Aw. Well, at least you know what you don’t like. But it really does look pretty
Onwards and upwards!
Laura: Did you somehow know, through our Broadway-and-sweets-and-legumes-loving psychic connection, that ‘onwards ever upwards’ is one of my personal “get on with life” phrases?
How have I not come across your blog before?! Chocolate and more chocolate! YUM! Shame about the orange in the chocolate block, because it really looks divine!
You’re right, there’s definitely a lot of chocolate here
But don’t be put off by the orange – the bar is really nice, it’s just not quite up my alley. But if you like orange, or flavourful chocolate, this is worth it!
oh how sad – I love orange but I sort of understand as I am just not into lemon and there are so many lemon desserts I see people rave about and just can’t share the enthusiasm – I just hope this chocolate went to a good appreciative stomach
But I like things this way – I’ll trade you every orange chocolate I come across and you can send all lemon delicious and lemon curd tarts my way
Preach it sister – down with the unholy choc orange combo!
And I was trying to think of what a Christmas themed chocolate bar that I made would taste like and…. umm all I can think of is booze. So apparently all we do at Christmas time is drink.
What, are we supposed to do something else at Christmas?
(Says the girl who’s notorious amongst her friends for being able to make one corona last for three hours…)
Pecan-Coconut Date Squares…
I found your entry interesting thus I’ve added a Trackback to it on my weblog
