I’m almost positive that I bought this chocolate in Munich. I say “almost” because, as you might remember, I was rather knocked about in Germany by a Liverpoolian disease involving loss of smell, taste, and hearing and an intense desire to smear bright orange fake tan all over my body (okay, okay, it was just the flu, and the last part, while clearly a rampant problem in Liverpool itself, didn’t strike me personally). Anyhoodle, what I’m trying to say is that while I normally have a crystal clear memory in regards to chocolate purchasing, I feel more opal about this bar’s origins.
But seriously, Himalayan salt, dark chocolate, and sheep milk powder? I’d have bought this even if it was being sold out of a stolen car’s boot.
Choco-Lina Himalayan Salt Dark Chocolate with Sheep Milk
After a journey through a multitude of climates, forms of transportation, and countries, this chocolate was a little worse for wear by the time I ate it. Battered, bruised, and bloomed, the chocolate nonetheless put forth a sweet aroma and showcased a light dusting of salt on its underside.
I’m sorry to say, though, that unlike Askinosie’s goat milk powder chocolate with its strong and fun chevre flavour, the sheep milk powder in this bar contributed no detectable flavour nuances. In fact, if it weren’t for the 70% cocoa content listed on the front of the packaging, I’d have guessed this to be a milk chocolate product, so sweet and lacking in complexity was it.
Don’t get me wrong, the salt played off nicely against the sweetness, but compared with chocolates such as Salazon’s three bars, B.T. McElrath’s Salty Dog, or the myriad other salt-focused bars I’ve reviewed here, this didn’t stand out.
I think I was more disappointed in this chocolate than I should have been, but that’s largely to do with unmet expectations. I was hoping for a darker-flavoured chocolate with a discernible sheep’s milk tang, and yet this bar was simply a sweet and pleasant milk chocolate-tasting concoction with subtle salt hits. It was nice without being striking, although I will admit that the embossed images were very cute.

mmm send me some!!
I would buy the chocolate for that sheep imprint. Totally cute. (But of course, I’d be disappointed too if the taste doesn’t match up)
Oh sad. I’m in love with this chocolate in theory. And aesthetically. I also would’ve bought it in an instant — it has EVERYTHING I want! Sweet! Salty! A little bit weird! Cute pictures! Aw!
I HATE DISAPPOINTING THINGS!
But at least it wasn’t aggressively-bad-disappointing…just..underwhelming-disappointing, which I suppose is preferable.
That’s such a cute chocolate…I love the little sheep on it. Pity it didn’t live up to your expectations but it sounds like you’d set it a high bar to jump over! I’ve never tried chocolate with salt…I don’t know if I’ve ever seen it to be honest either. Sounds weird…should I try it?
Aww a bit of a disappointment. What a shame! It had such potential really!
Lincoln: “Mm. I like that one.” Why? Who knows. Maybe the sheep?
that’s great that it’s even lactose free!
The Healthy Apron: I would if I could!
Anh: The taste was perfectly okay, and the sheep really was cute enough to forgive a few taste sins!
L-Izzle: I think it never stood a chance against Asknosie’s salty goaty deliciousness, even with the cute image!
Vaala: It’s not a common combination (yet) in Aus/NZ, although Lindt’s Sea Salt has just come into supermarkets here. Definitely try it if you spot it – the salt heightens the chocolatey deliciousness
Lorraine: You know, I feel like your statement could apply to K.Rudd…
Lauren: If he likes sheep, then that’s even more reason for the two of you to move Down Under. Move Down Under! I miss you.
Simply Life: Being lactose-intolerant myself, I was really looking forward to it. And it would be great for someone who likes sweet chocolates but can’t have normal milk chocolate!
You know it’s Liverpudlian, right? You just wrote Liverpoolian because it’s funnier? Sorry, the Beatlemaniac in me just can’t let these things go.
Camille: Oh, I love that you couldn’t resist correcting that. Yes, I just made up my own version, though in retrospect Liverpudlian may well be more amusing than Liverpoolian. But seeing as I made up the disease, too, I thought I should go the whole hog
Embossed images or not, how disappointing. Boo. I bet they put the images on there cos they knew it’d have to be a redeeming feature.
Conor: And from the responses here, it definitely worked as a redeeming feature! Consensus seems to be sheep = cute.
I shall try to find it in Hamburg
Fiona: Look out for Zotter chocolate too – the flavours are pure craziness.
